ADDRESS
OF THE APOSTOLIC NUNCIO DURING THE RECEPTION ON THE OCCASION OF THE
FEAST DAY OF THE HOLY SEE AND THE COMPLETION OF HIS DIPLOMATIC
MISSION IN CROATIA
(Zagreb,
27 June 2017)
Mr.
Speaker of the Parliament,
Mr.
Prime Minister,
Mr.
Croat Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Madam
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Distinguished
Ministers,
Mr.
Deputy Speaker of the Parliament,
Mr.
Representative of the President of the Republic,
Dear
Ambassadors and Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Your
Eminence, dear Archbishop of Zagreb,
Your
Excellencies, dear Bishops,
Distinguished
Representatives of religious Communities,
Honorable
Members of the Parliament,
Mr.
Mayor of Zagreb,
Ladies
and gentlemen,
First
of all, I would like to thank you all for your thoughtful presence at
this reception, which gives us the occasion to celebrate together the
Feast Day of the Holy See and, at the same time, gives me the
opportunity to bid my personal farewell, at the completion of my
diplomatic mission in Croatia.
1.
Let me say that already before my arrival in Croatia five years ago,
and especially when I was Apostolic Nuncio in Bosnia and Herzegovina
and Montenegro, I had heard many times that relations between the
Holy See and Croatia were uniquely characterized by century-long
bonds of shared concern and interest, which became even stronger in
the years after 1992, after the declaration and acknowledgement of
independence.
This
evening, as I am about to depart from Zagreb for the new assignment
in Malta and Libya, entrusted to me by the Holy Father Pope Francis,
I would like to
say that I am happy to have personally experienced all that in these
years of intense service.
2.
Furthermore, I would say that God’s providence had positioned me to
arrive in Zagreb at a period of particular importance for the history
of this Nation. I am thinking, in the first place, of the
extraordinary occurrence of July 1, 2013, when Croatia successfully
crowned the long process of European integration, and also of the
solemn celebrations this past January for the twenty-fifth
anniversary of the recognition of its independence, as well as of all
that has been done in recent years for the strengthening of
democratic institutions.
Additionally,
at a more ecclesial level, there were equally important events: five
episcopal appointments, the Agreement between the Faculty of
Philosophy of Jesuits and the State University of Zagreb, the work of
the Joint Commission of Croatian and Serbian Experts for a common
reading of the activities of Blessed Al. Stepinac.
Moreover,
glancing back at these past years, I personally find that, aside from
these major events, there have also been other accomplishments,
certainly more discrete, but nevertheless of great importance for
the diplomatic mission entrusted to me by the Holy Father. I think,
in particular, of the contacts we have established with many civil
and religious authorities in order to help promoting a culture of
dialogue, religious tolerance and good ecumenical and interreligious
relations. In my view, if we really care about social, civil and
religious progress of young democracies, then this dimension was, and
remains, a priority.
3.
Now, when I am departing from Croatia, allow me to express my
sincere gratitude to all of you. At first, to the civil authorities,
for the exquisite courtesy they have always had for me and the Holy
See. A very special thanks to the Collaborators of the Apostolic
Nunciature, those past and present; to the Colleagues of the
Diplomatic Corps; to the Cardinal Archbishop of Zagreb; to the
President of the Croatian Bishops’ Conference and to the Bishops,
to the President
of the Croatian Religious Conference, to the men and women religious;
to the clergy and lay faithful; to the representatives of the various
religious Communities. To all of you, I wish to extend my most
profound ‘thank you’ for the fraternal friendship you have
offered me, the goodness and understanding you have shown, the
support and the spiritual closeness with which you have accompanied
me, and the good example you have given me especially in very
delicate circumstances.
4.
Last but not least, at the close of my mission, I would like to
leave you with a little souvenir.
So, thanks to the generosity of Večernji
List
and Styria,
at the exit there will be distributed two recently published volumes.
The
first is a monograph that this newspaper wanted to pen about my
service in Croatia. With pleasure I accepted this initiative, in
which I have seen above all the intention to present to the general
public something written about the modest contribution which I too,
by the grace of God, was able to offer in these years - according to
the directives of Pope Benedict XVI before, and now of Pope Francis -
to the development of relations between the Holy See and Croatia, in
the field of ecumenical relations and interreligious dialogue, and
for the process of growth of these beautiful local Churches,.
The
second volume presents a collection of the most important articles
that Mr. Jozo Pavković, Editor-in-Chief of Večernji
List BiH,
wrote in recent years about the difficult situation of the Croatian
people in BiH. That he did in part due to my insistence, because - as
you know - Bosnia and Herzegovina has been at the center of my
efforts and concerns over the past 11 years. It’s a very
interesting work, for which I also had the honor to write the
introduction. I would highly recommend it to you, in order, at the
very least, to have a clearer idea of the complex issues that
are still being discussed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
5.
Again thank you all. I am leaving with wonderful memories of these
years. I wish each of you all the best in your future activities. I
am confident that we will have the opportunity to meet again and to
continue to develop our friendship in the future. Thank you, thank
you very much.

PAROLE
DEL NUNZIO APOSTOLICO
AL
RICEVIMENTO PER LA LA FESTA DEL PAPA
E
AL TERMINE DELLA SUA MISSIONE IN CROAZIA
(Zagabria
27 giugno 2017)
Vorrei
stesso io ho l'opportunità di bid farewell from you , al termine
della mia missione in Croazia .
popolo croato lungo i secoli.
Croazia.
2.
Vorrei
sociale, e buone relazioni ecumeniche e interreligiose.
esprimere viva gratitudine a tutti voi.
mio servizio in Croazia.
occupazioni e preoccupazioni in questi ultimi 11 anni.
Grazie
