12 ottobre 2017 S. E. l’Arcivescovo Alessandro D’Errico, Nunzio
Apostolico a Malta e in Libia, è stato ricevuto con tutti gli onori
al Palazzo Presidenziale di La Valletta, per la consegna delle
Credenziali Diplomatiche alla Signora Marie-Louise
Coleiro Preca, Presidente
della Repubblica di Malta.
La

In
questo ricevimento Mons. D’Errico rivolge ufficialmente l’indirizzo
di saluto a nome di Papa Francesco alla Presidente della Repubblica
ed esprime gli orientamenti diplomatici della Santa Sede;
orientamenti
che
fanno riferimento a Malta vista dal Santo Padre con una “attenzione
privilegiata”, sia per le dinamiche ecclesiali dell’isola e sia
per lo
sviluppo economico e la
collaborazione internazionale.
La
notizia di questi due avvenimenti è stata anche affidata a due
comunicati ufficiali pubblicati sul portale dell’Arcidiocesi di
Malta: il primo illustrato con una breve scheda curriculare del
Nunzio Apostolico; ed il secondo con la pubblicazione del discorso
ufficiale tenuto da Mons. D’Errico all’assemblea del ricevimento
presidenziale. Sul

On
Thursday, 12th October 2017, the Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Mgr
Alessandro D'Errico, presented his credentials to the President of
Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, at The Palace in Valletta. During
the ceremony, the President of Malta and the Apostolic Nuncio
discussed bilateral relations.
Archbishop
Alessandro D’Errico, the new Apostolic Nuncio in Malta, was born in
Frattamaggiore, in Naples, Italy on 18th November 1950. He was
ordained priest in 1974, and consecrated as Titular Archbishop of
Carini in 1998. He studied at the Pontifical Academy in Rome and
holds a doctorate in Philosophy.
Archbishop
Alessandro D’Errico joined the Holy See Diplomatic Service in 1977
after having served in several nunciatures. Archbishop D’Errico was
appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Pakistan (1999-2005), in Bosnia &
Herzegovina (2005-2012), in Montenegro (2010-2012), and in Croatia
(2012-2017).
Archbishop
D’Errico is concurrently Apostolic Nuncio in Libya.

Speech by the Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr Alessandro D’Errico

The President's Palace, Attard12th October 2017Your Excellency, Madam President,It has been a great honor for me to present to Your Excellency, the Letter of His Holiness Pope Francis, accrediting me as Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to the Republic of Malta, together with the Letter of Recall of my Predecessor.Recalling Your Excellency’s visits to the Vatican of 2014 and 2016, the Holy Father has instructed me to convey to Your Excellency, as well as to the Members of the Government of the Republic of Malta and to the civil authorities, his warm greetings and fervent wishes for the development, progress and prosperity of the country.
Madam
President, it is well known that the Holy Father and the Holy See
look at Malta with a privileged attention, for the multi-secular
history of solid ties between this Nation and the Holy See and for
the ecclesial dynamism of this Catholic community. The Holy Father is
happy with the good relations between the Holy See and the Republic
of Malta, which is sanctioned by the numerous bilateral agreements
with the aim of a profitable collaboration at the service of the
common good. He follows with great attention Malta’s contribution
within the European Union. This contribution, in such sad situations
of conflict in the Mediterranean and worrisome migration towards
Europe, helps towards a search for solutions which both the Church
and the Government are committed to in order to promote and implement
adequate initiatives, respectful of the dignity of every person.
The
Holy Father wishes that many positive fruits may be achieved through
the economic progress which the Republic of Malta has been
registering throughout these years. At the same time he hopes that
together with this economic progress, opportune initiatives are also
offered and indeed increased, to ameliorate the quality of life of
citizens, especially with regard to the more vulnerable strata of
society.
During
the past few weeks since my arrival in Malta, with great joy I have
been able to notice that the Catholic community is actively
cooperating in achieving high standards of human and social welfare;
and it wishes to continue to offer its contribution, especially in
some of the fields more corresponding to its nature: such as culture,
education, health care, assistance to needy people, defense of human
rights.
As
far as I am concerned, I shall be happy to play my part in the common
search of initiatives and proposals that might allow Malta to cope
with the challenges that it is facing, both locally and in the
international community. And I shall be equally pleased to give my
contribution for a fruitful collaboration with the civil authorities
and institutions.
Madam
President, at the beginning of my mission, let me add that I do hope
and pray that the friendly relations, which so happily exist between
Malta and the Holy See will continue to grow in the years to come. In
advance I wish to express my gratitude for the support and
cooperation of the civil authorities for the fulfillment of my
mission.
May
God bless Your Excellency, Your Family and the people of the Republic
of Malta.

MESSAGGIO
PONTIFICIO PER LA CONFERENZA INTERNAZIONALE “OUR OCEAN“
(Malta
, 5-6 ottobre 2017).
In
questo post è linkata
sul portale dell’Arcidiocesi di Malta anche la lettera inviata alla
Conferenza a nome di Papa Francesco dal Cardinale Pietro Parolin,
Segretario di Stato; ne leggiamo alcuni brani nella traduzione ad
sensum dall’inglese:
Quarta
Conferenza Internazionale sul nostro Oceano, un Oceano per la Vita.
Sua
Santità prende l'occasione per incoraggiare uno sforzo concertato
per affrontare una serie di questioni urgenti che incidano
direttamente sul benessere di innumerevoli uomini e donne: il
traffico di esseri umani, il lavoro schiavo e le condizioni di lavoro
disumane associate all'industria della pesca e al trasporto
commerciale, e le opportunità di sviluppo nelle comunità costiere e
le famiglie di coloro che pescano e la situazione delle isole
minacciate dai livelli del mare in aumento.
Gli
oceani ci uniscono e ci convocano per lavorare insieme. Come ha
osservato Sua Santità in Laudato Si ', "tutto è
interconnesso". Il nostro mondo deve oggi vedere che gli oceani
sono una risorsa fondamentale nella lotta contro la povertà e il
cambiamento climatico.
Gli
oceani ci ricordano la necessità di educare per l'alleanza tra
l'umanità e l'ambiente (cfr Laudato Si ', 209-215). A questo
proposito, si dovrebbe impegnare a formare i giovani a prendersi cura
degli oceani, ma anche, ove possibile, aiutandoli a crescere nella
conoscenza, nell'apprezzamento e nella contemplazione della loro
vastità e grandezza. Per la contemplazione della creazione ci può
insegnare preziose lezioni e essere un'infinita fonte di ispirazione
(cfr Laudato Si ', 85).
Con
la certezza del mio profondo interesse per le deliberazioni della
Conferenza, ho l'onore di ripetere i buoni auguri di preghiera di
Papa Francesco e di trasmettere la sua benedizione.

1.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, it is with great joy that we are
gathered in this special place, so rich in history, and so dear for
us Christians. St Paul, the great Apostle of the Nations, lived here
for about three months. The Order of St John, of which you are
members, was instrumental, from the early seventeenth century, in
promoting and developing the relevance of this sacred place.
2.
We have listened to the First Reading which describes the most
important moments of the journey of Paul from the island of Crete,
and how he and two hundred and seventy-five others with him on the
ship suffered a terrible storm. As the Acts of the Apostles tells us,
Paul reached the island of Malta, unexpectedly, because he was
shipwrecked.
For
many centuries, this site has been a place of pilgrimage because Paul
was here. Pope St. John Paul II (in 1990) and Pope Benedict XVI (in
2010) both visited the Grotto and stopped here to pray.
Furthermore
this place is important for the people of Malta in a very special
way. Saint Paul evangelized the people of these Islands. He preached
the Good News to them, after they had welcomed him with extraordinary
kindness and generous hospitality.

Today’s Gospel passage tells us what the Risen Christ said to his
Apostles before he ascended into heaven: “Go out to the whole
world; proclaim the Gospel to all creation” (Mk 16:15). This is
what Paul of Tarsus did. St Paul was a great missionary who
evangelized many lands, particularly in Asia Minor and Greece, and
also in Malta. Your pilgrimage to the Grotto and the Church of St
Paul invites you to reflect upon our call, as Christians, to proclaim
the Good News today. Pope Francis often speaks about a missionary
Church (“un choix missionnaire”), a Church which “goes forth”
(L’Église “en sortie”) (Evangelii Gaudium, nn. 24, 27, 46).
As
men and women who have received the sacrament of Baptism, as well as
committed members of the Order of St John, you too are called to
embrace this mission with responsibility, enthusiasm and joy. Just
think of the many occasions, in your daily life, when with a few
words or by your Christian example, you may be living signs of the
Good News of the Lord.
4.
Finally let me share with you an important message of hope. Sometimes
we may feel discouraged because Church attendance, in Europe, and
especially in countries like France, has fallen dramatically. In the
past, we used to have full churches, especially on Sundays and feast
days. We then saw missionary work as being ad extra or ad gentes. We
know how many missionaries left Europe to faraway lands!
Even
for St. Paul, there were many occasions when he encountered
difficulties: resistance, darkness and other problems. But he was
never discouraged because his faith was in the Lord. He went on, even
when faced with great difficulties.
Today,
we have come to realize that missionary work in Europe is a mission
ad intra, or, in other words, in our own cities. I trust that you too
, when you will leave this grotto and Church, return to your
activities with a renewed missionary commitment, even more reinforced
in your conviction that this is your mission as Christians and as
members of the Order of St. John in today’s world.

Dear brothers and sisters, this pilgrimage of yours brings you to a
place where Tradition says the first Eucharist in Malta was
celebrated. May our prayer, here, in the celebration of the Eucharist
renew us in our Christian faith! Through the intercession of St Paul,
may we become true missionaries of the 21st century, missionaries in
our towns and cities! May our life be a true reflection of the Gospel
message! May we pass Christ and his Gospel to others by what we say
and what we do! Amen.
